The Competitive Program has consistently produced some of the best athletes in Canada — provincial team members, national team members, and Olympians and Paralympians among them.
It is built for athletes in the Train to Compete and Train to Win phases of development, and it exists to take performance to the next level.

Recreational membership
Recreational membership covers coaching, training equipment and facility access without the competition support. Pricing varies and is confirmed with the head coach — get in touch and we will set it up.
Recreational members who want to compete beyond our home meets, or at the provincial and national championship level, need to upgrade to a competitive membership.
Training Times
Training days and times vary depending on the group, the coach and the season. The windows below are when the track is open to the program.
Daytime slots between 9:00 am and 3:00 pm can be booked Monday to Thursday — contact the head coach to arrange one.
What Athletes Receive
Coaching and facilities
The best coaching and technical leadership, and use of training equipment at both the Dome and the Terry Fox Athletic Facility.
A seasonal pass to the Terry Fox Facility at Mooney’s Bay, access to the Dome @ Louis Riel during club training hours, and reduced entry fees to Ottawa Lions hosted events.
Competition support
Travel and accommodation coordination, and administrative support, for all club sanctioned events.
Entry fees paid to both Provincial (two events) and National Track & Field Championships, where entry standards have been achieved. Athletes in the U20 and Open categories also receive four nights of shared accommodation for their National Track & Field Championships once the respective standards are met.
Athletes who wish to be registered for Athletics Canada sanctioned competitions — indoor from January 1, outdoor from May 1, or cross country from September — should notify the head coach as soon as possible.
For funded athletes on PSO or NSO programs, membership is provided as of January 1 each year.
Medal bonus credits
Athletes in the Competitive Annual or Varsity Annual categories who medal at a U-Sports Nationals, or at a U20 or Open National Championship, receive a credit against the following year’s membership fees as of September 1.
Individual medal at an Athletics Canada Athletics or Cross Country Championship — $500. Top 8 finish at a National Championship, or top 6 at a U-Sports National Championship — $200. Relay team or cross country team medal at an Athletics Canada National Championship — $100 for each athlete who contributed to the team result. Individual Athletics Ontario medal, U20 or Open — $100.
For the Athletics Canada Cross Country National Championship, both individual and team medal achievements extend to the U18 division as well.
Competition uniform
Annual and summer membership athletes who attend competitions are supplied with a uniform — top and bottom — and a t-shirt. A t-shirt is presented to all seasonal members.
The uniform belongs to the club and is to be worn at all club organized competitions and championships. No modifications are accepted. The athlete cleans and maintains it, and replaces any item that is damaged or lost by purchasing it from the club. Every two years the club considers replacing the competition uniform items, on their return.
Recreational memberships
Recreational membership includes coaching and technical leadership, use of training equipment at the Terry Fox Athletic Facility and the Louis Riel Dome, a seasonal pass to Terry Fox at Mooney’s Bay, access to the Dome during club training hours, and reduced entry fees to Ottawa Lions hosted events.
To compete at events beyond our home meets, or at the provincial and national championship level, athletes must upgrade to a competitive membership.
Athlete obligations
Athletes must abide by the club’s Statement of Expectations.
The issued competition club uniform must be worn at all club organized meets and championships.
As part of the competitive stream, athletes are encouraged to compete in their Provincial and National Championships when qualified, as well as all locally hosted events. The Lions also provide employment opportunities for high school and university students.
Training Locations
The program moves between two facilities across the year.
