Varsity Stadium was packed shoulder to shoulder on Tuesday, more than 800 runners from over 70 clubs filling the historic Toronto oval for a night built around one distance: the 800m. Heat after heat, athletes chased personal bests under the lights — and seven of the Lions’ 12 entries found one.
The men’s story belonged to Stephen Evans and Safwan El Mansari, two of the best 800m runners in Club history. The pair raced side by side in the 37th and final heat of the night, with El Mansari pushing the pace on the first lap, hitting the bell in second at 51.89 seconds. Evans would make his move over the final quarter of the race, pushing past his clubmate on the homestretch to cross the line in 1:49.23 for seventh overall. El Mansari placed 10th in 1:50.22.
On the women’s side, Bianca Arabackyj put on a show. She dropped the hammer on the back stretch of her heat and rolled to a win of more than 20 metres over teammate Autumn Sakiyama, stopping the clock at 2:15.45 to drop more than eight seconds from her previous best. The Lions top performer on the women’s side was Sophia McIntyre. The reigning University of Ottawa rookie of the year placed fourth in a very tight heat that saw the top five separated by less than a second as she crossed in 2:12.04. McIntyre’s time on Tuesday shaved more than a second off her previous best set at Boston University in January.
Five more Lions added personal bests of their own: Matisse Joly cut more than eight seconds off his best to run 2:08.71, Naeema Abdullahi took a similar chunk off hers to go 2:39.00, Brennan Lee edged his mark down to 1:57.71, and Autumn Sakiyama and Kyle Eastlake ran 2:18.13 and 2:19.35, respectively.
